How to Choose a New World of Warcraft Server

by Anne Glitsky

When I first started on World of Warcraft, I had no idea where I should create my new characters. So I decided to ask a few friends which server is the best. No one had an answer, so I went to the server where most of them are playing…Only to find out that it doesn’t suit what I want to do on WoW, or how I want to play the game.

Jonathan Kenins of secretwarcraft.com offers guidelines on how one can go about doing that. I found his latest podcast while searching for server guides. I found it quite useful, he goes into detail on how you can choose a server that meets your standards on how you would like to play the game.

The way I want to play World of Warcraft is to earn a lot of money through the auction house. In order to do this, I would need to find a server that has a lot of people.

There’s a website that will help you get an idea of how many Horde and Alliance are on a particular server. WarcraftRealms.com uses an add-on to do a census on US or EU WoW servers.

A couple of things that you need in order to make a lot of money on a particular server: A populated server – More people means a higher demand for items, so they’re more higher priced than that of a server with not a lot of people.

A good balance between Alliance and Horde. That, or you can choose a server that has a bit less people playing on the side that you want to be in. The side with less players will usually have a higher price range on items.

Depending on the way you want to play the game, you can either go PVE or PVP. If, like me, you want to make lots of money…You’d be better off going PVE. You will have to gather a lot of stuff in the wild, and this can get pretty annoying on a PVP server.

Finally, once you have eliminated the servers that you don’t want to be playing on based on the guidelines above, what Jonathan Kenins advises you to do is to make level 1 characters on each server (1 on each faction) and bring them to their respective auction house ” Stormwind for Alliance and Undercity for Horde. Just do a scan, look up and monitor prices for high-end herbs like Goldclover, Deadnettle, Tiger Lily and so forth. 40g and up a stack would be a good price for these herbs.

Check out Cobalt Ores, Mithril Bars, and Gems, these trade goods usually go for a high price. What you need is a server that is wealthy enough to support prices in the higher-end for these items. If these things are more on the lower-end of the price range, then that server probably isn’t for you.
